Music Manager won't recognize Ifp in XP

I've had my IFP 895 a couple years and used it off and on but I'm having a hard time getting music manager to recognize it recently in windows xp. It is recognized by my computer in Win XP but it shows as disconnected in music manager v 3.21. The firmware version is ver 1.75 which I was able to upgrade to on a Win98 computer which works perfectly but that didn't solve the problem. At the moment I'm having to transfer music from my computer through the network to my IFP 895 connected through win98 on another computer. I would appreciate any help or thoughts on this. Thank you!

I have 2 ifp-895 and 1 ifp-899 (and an H10-20Gig). I have seen some behavior like this if Windows Media Player or another tool (like winamp) is running. It behaves like Windows Media Player locks the driver. You have probably closed all applications before you submitted this issue but I thought I would post it. I have XP up to date on 2 machines with IMM working fine. When WMP is closed, IMM usually immediately sees the ifp device.

As an alternative to IRiver Music Manager, I have used Total Commander:
    Total Commander - home
    with the iriver plugin:
Iriver Storage 2.2b - Total Commander

You install Total Commander, unpack the iriver plugin (iplug22b.wfx is extracted) and point total commander to use it via Configuration->Options->Plugins->File System Plugins
    and add iplug22b.wfx to it.

This is like IMM in which you have 2 window panes: source + dest.
So on the source side, you would pick c:\my_music
And on the dest side you would like to pick the iriver player, which is a little trick
    or non-intuitive:
To pick the ifp-895, it is under the drive letter drop-down control: which lists c:,d:,...Network Neighborhood.
Under Network Neighborhood, you should see Iriver Storage if your plug-in is added (even
if your iriver player is not physically connected).

A huge benefit of this tool is that it allows you to copy (mp3, wma, ogg) files from dest. to source that the IMM does not.
Before finding this tool, I was using dos to rename *.mp3 to *.rec (which the Iriver 895 will
play) and then you can use IMM to copy from dest. to source.
    iRiver H10 20G Blue (FW: iRiver 2.51US, 3600 Songs)
    iRiver ifp-895 (x2), ifp-899, T60 (4G)
    Sennheiser PX100
    Sennheiser HD490
    1995 BMW 525i w/ Sony Cassette adapter
    Adcom/Klipsch aux-in at home

The biggest benefit of all is off-topic: Total Commander is a very useful replacement for Windows Explorer.

This particular plug-in allows you to treat the iFP as a folder on your hard drive. In TC, an iFP with MM firmware will behave almost the same as if it had UMS firmware. And you don't have the disadvantages, such as recordings limited to 96 kbps. The only down-side is that you can't share files directly with non-TC users.

    Hi
    Glad I found this thread!
I did everything and got the TC with IRIVER in my network places, but "no devices found."
    Any help on that?

My iFP-895T works fine. Apparently, you are doing something different than me.

    - Is the USB port fully functional? (Are you using a USB hub?)

    - What model iriver are you using?

    - Will the device connect to the Music Manager - or connect as a thumb-drive?

    - Is the plug-in "Iplug22b.wfx"?

    - Does the network entry read "IRIVER" or "Iriver Storage"?

1-THE USB IS FUNCTIONAL, I SEE THE IFP-799 ON THE USB LIST IN THE DEVICE MANAGER.
2-i PLUG THE USB CABLE DIRECTLY TO THE PC.
    3-IFP-799
4-THE DEVICE DOESN'T WANT TO CONNECT TO THE IMM, IT SHOWS "DISCONECTED". THIS IS WHY I STARTED THE WHOLE EFFORT.
5-THE PLUGIN IS INSTALLED OK, THE NETWORK ENTRY SHOWS IRIVER STORAGE AND INSIDE IT SAYS NO DEVICES FOUND.

Q: do I need to instal a driver? or the WIN XP recognizes the device and it should be enough? what I did from the beginning is: I installed the IMM, conected the IFP, the PC installed new hardware, the IMM did not connect. The firmware is 1.244

    - The plugin IS the driver.

[Oops, my bad! You DO need the iRiver driver (e.g., Ifp700.sys) - the plug-in will not work without it. Discovered this when I tried to use the TC plug-in on a machine that had never had a Music Manager install.]

    - TC network entry "Iriver Storage" suggests that the plugin is installed.
    - Appearance of 799 on the USB list (as opposed to Disk drives) suggests that you have the appropriate (MM) firmware.

Yet for some reason the plugin is not detecting your unit. Sorry, but I have no insights (other than uninstalling IMM and whatever driver got installed with it).

One work-around is to re-flash with UMS firmware, so you can use the unit as a mass storage device. Downside is that your recording bitrate will be limited to 96 kbps - but for many (most?) users, that is not an issue. Upside is that your device will be universally connectable - no drivers required.

    UMS vs MANAGER

I saw these two options, what is the difference?
What version to install? I saw 195, 175,and others.

Maybe you should do a forum search on this - I personally don't know all the ramifications. But, as I see it:

With the MM firmware you can't just use the unit like a thumb drive - you need special software. However, the MM firmware runs more efficiently, and therefore allows you to record at a higher bitrate.

The UMS software makes your unit into a mass storage device - plug it in anywhere, and add whatever files you want, even non-music files.

Yes, there are multiple firmware versions available, and with regional variants. People usually want the latest version. The last I heard, the EU firmwares limit the earphone volume - for health reasons. Some users don't like that restriction.

It is possible that a firmware upgrade may solve your problem - but maybe not. Personally, I'd go for the UMS, unless I really needed to record higher than 96 kbps. With UMS, the TC plugin is not needed.

Thanks for the info. I 'll continue to search for a solution.
I do not want to update firmware - I see a lot of problems with update in this site.
Also -from time to time the IMM connects to the IFP, I do not know why and when, it is a mistery.
It did not connect to the TC...
    Anyway - thanks again.

    having the same problem....

hi all...I've been using three Irivers for live recording purposes and as mp3 players...never had a problem.

Recently had to do reinstalls on all my computers....2 with XP and one with WIN98....

    then the problems began...

Plug in my i896 on the XP computer...and after continuing anyway after the "the software this has'nt passed ,,etc etc"... I get "an error occurred during the installation of this device .... a service installation section in this INF file is invalid".

SO...no install of drivers and therefore I get the dreaded "disconnected" window in IMM.

I tried to do an install on the WIN98 and the problem there is IMM won't function...due to a missing DLL file.."collate"..linke to the IMM DLL file..so no luck there either.

I tried running TOTAL COMMANDER but since the XP computer won't see the i895, TC can't see the i895 either....

TRIED all of the above with my 2 i795s,,,same result all the way around...

I'd change the units over to UMS but can't see the damn units on any computer to do it....it's which came first...the chicken or the egg...lol...

    SOOOO...any suggestions...would be a help....thanks!!!!!

    Mark

I am having the same problem. Sometimes I can get it to connect by trying a different USB port or rebooting, but the only way I have been able to connect consistently is to reboot XP in SAFE MODE. This has worked every time for me. Hopefully someone figures out why XP is having trouble connecting.

I don't understand your Safe Mode situation.

However, I could not get my laptop to see my 895, until I installed the iRiver driver, in addition to the TC plug-in. (I was not aware that my desktop had been using this driver - it was possibly retained from a previous Music Manager install.)

Currently, my XP desktop and laptop are working fine with

    - 895 with MM firmware, via the TC plug-in
    - 899 with MM firmware, via the TC plug-in
    - 780 with UMS firmware

I have also faced this problem.
    That's what I've found out:

    1. On win XP with current updates I can't install iriver drivers - I always get an error. So IMM can't connect to the player. I'ts all the same even on computers that have never seen my player before.

    2. On Vista drivers install without problems, but I can't do a firmware update. No error message, but just nothing happens after pushing "Firmware update".

But ... it was working fine about 6-8 months ago. So I decided that it is the fault of some Microsoft updates that came in between.

I have installed a fresh copy of Windows XP with SP3, but without any updates on the Virtual machine VMWare, then installed IMM, connected my player - and voila - it worked as before!
So I decided to change firmware to UMS (flash disc type), I did it on th VMWare machine and now it's working everywhere, even on updated XP and on Vista.

So conclusion is - Microsoft :(

If you dont want UMS, just use IMM on the Virtual machine which is never updated.

    Greetings

    - Piotr

Were you trying to install using "setup.exe"? If so, then have you also tried going to the iFPDriver directory and installing via the inf file? If you can get only the driver itself (e.g., ifp800.sys) installed, then you can use the Total Commander plug-in, and you won't need IMM.

I seem to recall that a firmware update can be done without IMM, if you have an alternative means to transfer the update file to the root directory of the iFP - such as via Total Commander.

    cheers, L.

I tried to use Total commander to transfer the ums firmware with no luck. It would transfer then when i unplugged it and the player restarted it was gone.

I have only installed IMM via setup, didn't try the inf file method.

I see what you mean. I tried it on an 895 with IMM firmware. You can copy files to the root, or to anywhere else. But in the root, any file that has a firmware filename will disappear.

My error. I've been using UMS firmware for so long that I assumed that the technique also works for IMM firmware. But so far it looks like the only way to update IMM firmware is via the IMM. :(

Based on my (limited) experience thus far... if some of your units have UMS and others have IMM firmware, the TC method lets you do file transfers using the same interface. However, you can't transfer directly between two IMM units.
