ifp-899 : usb is dead? no reaction on PC

    Hi there folks!

I've got an ifp-899 which after some time stopped being recognized on PC's. It's IMM firmware and both IMM and windows do not see the player even exists ! Tried on different PC's with different cables.
So if windows does not even report any device I can assume there is hardware problem with the usb?
The player however switches to "usb connected" mode when connected to PC.

Any suggestions for repair? resoldering of the port might help? if not is it the player chipset or something?
    Thanks!

Try moving the usb cable around a bit where it goes into your player , if it gets recognized then it will probably be a loose or cracked solder joint where the usb port joins the board.
Does the player appear in device manager? If so you could try uninstalling and reinstalling it and see if that does any good.

    I have a similar problem.

I have an iFP-899 which has UMS v.1.95 installed.

I can connect the USB cable to the player without problems. As soon as I plug the USB cable into a PC, the battery indicator on the player shows the battery level at either one bar or completely dead (although it's actually a fresh alkaline cell).

The player does not say the USB is connected, and the computer does not show the USB icon (which would indicate that it sees the player). However, the same PC and the same USB cable work fine with other devices... so the problem seems to be in this particular iRiver.

I would love to restore this player to an earlier version of firmware, but is there any way to do that, if the computer and player don't "see" each other?

    THANKS!

Do you have "Creative" software installed on your PC?

Don't know if this will help, but I had a similar problem with ifp895 refusing to connect on any Xp computers (had worked fine on old computers with Win 98). I even tried installing Win98 on the new computers. Nothing worked.

I then changed the USB cable, and everything was fine. Seems the iRiver USB cable (the one with the cylindrical attachments (ferrite cores) on either side of the cable has something to do with transfer???

Let me know if the problem's solved (for the future when I'll need to reinstall Xp myself!)
